Garrett Wieland is a singer-songwriter living in Corpus Christi, Texas, and one part of the Americana group The Independent Thieves. He is also the former radio host of long-running folk show “Some Call it Folk,” a co-founder of the Corpus Christi Songwriters Festival, and former staff member and host of local listening room The Churchyard. He has released two albums: “Letter from the End of the World” with his band (2015), and “What Keeps the Heart Afloat,” his first solo album (2021).
Wieland is currently working on his sophomore solo album of songs written during the pandemic. His songs are inspired by the old west, literature, mental health and love, and not always in that order but sometimes in the same song.

Press on “What Keeps the Heart Afloat”

  • “Truly, each of the dozen songs included could serve as a centerpiece for a short essay. Beautiful little creations, these are.”

    Fervor Coulee-roots music opinion

  • “An effort that illustrates Wieland’s diverse skill set, his folk and country nods are certainly appreciated, and let’s hope he finds time for more solo work in the future, cause he knows his way around a song we won’t soon forget.”

    Take Effect

  • “I like this guy; he carries a big musical tradition with little effort & gets the tales across with expertise. He’s like a young man with old man experience. When an artist can write songs that Waylon Jennings would’ve sung & Jim Reeves too – that’s great songwriting.”

    John Apice, Americana Highways

  • “Overall, What Keeps the Heart Afloat is an argument for the virtues of a good ear, a watchful eye, and conscientious craftsmanship. His colleagues in the trade could benefit from Wieland's example.”
